In Maharashtra, India, 12 children have been accused of giving hand sanitizer drops instead of polio vaccines.
The incident took place in Yavatmal district of Maharashtra on Sunday. All of those children are less than 5 years old. They were taken to hospital after being given a sanitizer drop.
An official of the Yavatmal District Council said the 12 children were given two drops of hand sanitizer instead of the vaccine as part of the polio vaccination program. One child fell ill but after treatment they are now healthy.
Three health workers, including a doctor, have been sacked for negligence after the incident.
Earlier, there were allegations of feeding sanitizer to a 10-month-old baby in Unakoti district of Tripura, India. One hopeful was accused of feeding the child a sanitizer instead of water after the child was vaccinated against polio at the country’s primary health center. The child fell ill after eating the sanitizer. He was later admitted to the hospital.❐
