New York City and the surrounding area could see another 6 inches of snow on Sunday after last week’s major snowstorm.

The winter storm warning is in effect until 9 p.m. Sunday. It covers all of New York City, as well as Long Island, part of Westchester, a swath of northern New Jersey and southwestern Connecticut.

The storm won’t rival last weekend’s blockbuster snowfall. NYC can expect around six inches of snow on Sunday, according to the latest update from the National Weather Service.

Emergency Management Department Commissioner Deanne Criswell said Saturday over 6 inches could be possible.

Criswell said roadway dining and Open Streets would be suspended Sunday and that the Emergency Operations Center would be activated at 6 a.m. A hazardous travel advisory was also issued, she said.

As of Sunday afternoon, New York state planned to close two vaccine sites at Stony Brook and Jones Beach on Long Island, with appointments to be rescheduled in the coming week, but all others remained open. Governor Andrew Cuomo said Saturday the heavy snowfall and high winds could result in power outages on Long Island.

The city’s Sanitation Department began preparing Saturday by salting and brining the streets. Snow plowing begins once there’s 2 inches of snow on the ground, the agency said.

Emergency snow laborers would be out Monday, after the snowfall is expected to stop, according to Sanitation Commissioner Ed Grayson.

The city’s open restaurants program is closed today due to plowing, though sidewalk dining specifically is still open, Mayor Bill de Blasio said on NY1 Saturday evening.

Vaccination sites were expected to remain open, and schools were expected to be open Monday too, de Blasio said.

The MTA said regular Sunday schedules will continue, though articulated buses will be replaced with local buses fitted with snow chains. NYC Transit is prepared to deploy snow blowers and de-icing subway cars to keep the outdoor tracks cleared of snow and ice.

De Blasio said on NY1 the snowfall is expected to be “much smaller” than last week’s snow storm.❐

Here's our latest briefing for the winter storm we are expecting today. Snow accumulations of 5-8" for NYC, Long Island, and much of Southern CT with lower amounts in the Lower Hudson Valley.
