Bangla translation of the late renowned American historian and playwright Howard Zinn’s play Emma is now available at Amar Ekushey Book Fair.
Emma depicts events from the life of American anarchist Emma Goldman. Howard Zinn wrote the play using Goldman’s autobiography, correspondence between Goldman and anarchist Alexander Berkman and other research. It was first performed in 1976.
The play has been translated into Bangla by poet-translator and editor of literary magazine Lekhalekhir Uthon Mazhar Ziban. It has been published by Gronthik Prokashoni.
Mazhar Ziban said, ‘Emma Goldman was one of the pioneers of anarchist political philosophy in America and Europe in the first half of the twentieth century. In Bangladesh, such school of thought does not have many followers. The absence of anarchism is deeply felt in Bangladesh. As a result, the readers of Bangladesh will be more interested in the transformational politics associated with the movement, especially in the context of the increasing oppression of the state, exploitation, terrorism, the skewed gender relations, freedom of expression, love and sex, etc. These issues motivated me to translate the play Emma.’
