Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain on Wednesday and lauded her for her triumph. He also shared an anecdote with her on a lighter note.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with star boxer Lovlina Borgohain over the phone on Wednesday and congratulated her for her bronze medal triumph at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Borgohain became the second female Indian boxer after the legendary Mary Kom to win an Olympic medal. She had entered the semi-final after defeating Chinese Taipei’s Nien-Chin Chen in the quarters to assure herself of a medal.

On Wednesday, the Assam boxer took on reigning world champion Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey in her semi-final bout and lost the game comprehensively in the women’s 69kg welterweight category. Nonetheless, she signed off from her maiden Olympics with a bronze medal to her name after a spirited show against Surmeneli, who was far superior on the day and outclassed the Indian thoroughly.

During his conversation with Lovlina, PM Modi said her win was a testimony to the talent and tenacity of India’s ‘Nari Shakti’ (women power). He congratulated her over her historic feat and also brought up an interesting anecdote on a lighter note. In a lighter vein, PM Modi told Borgohain, who was born on October 2, 1997 (Gandhi Jayanti), how “Gandhi Ji spoke about non-violence but she is famous for her punches,” as per PTI.

While some of them have failed to live up to the expectations, some Indian athletes have punched above their weight at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Borgohain is one of those who outperformed expectations at the Games and came out on top with flying colours to return with a medal from her debut Olympics campaign.

Well fought @LovlinaBorgohai! Her success in the boxing ring inspires several Indians. Her tenacity and determination are admirable. Congratulations to her on winning the Bronze. Best wishes for her future endeavours. #Tokyo2020
