Following a massive landslide in Uttarakhand’s Joshimath village two weeks ago, a hotel built on top of NTPC’s tunnel collapsed on Saturday.
A large chunk of the hotel was seen abruptly collapsing on the side of the cliff on Saturday afternoon and sliding over the brink of the cliff.
Fortunately, local police and SDRF had evacuated the hotel ahead of time owing to the possible risk of another landslide.
While the main gate of NTPC leading into the tunnel has also been entirely wrecked, the hotel in question is believed to have developed cracks during the landslide that struck the area a fortnight ago.
There is a constant concern of landslide fissures on the Badrinath National Highway.
Several landslides occurred in front of the Tapovan-Vishnugad Hydroelectric Project tunnel on July 25, resulting in a landslide at Jhadkula on the Badrinath Highway.
After the landslide was reported from beneath the hotel, Joshimath officials ordered the building to be evacuated.
Meanwhile, demolition of the Badrinath Highway has commenced.
