Ruhul Amin Fakir, father of Shariful Islam Shehzad who has been arrested in Mumbai for allegedly breaking into Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan’s house, has claimed that the person seen in CCTV footage breaking into the house is not his son.
Fakir told BBC Bangla that he came to know about his son’s arrest in India through TV channels and Facebook.
“Seeing the images of the footage, I can say there is a difference between the person arrested and the person seen in the video. They have arrested my son, but they [his son and the person in the footage] are different,” Ruhul told BBC Bangla.
Ruhul Amin, a resident of Jhalakathi, described his 30-year-old son as someone who has always kept his hair short and styled upward. In contrast, the person in the footage has longer hair covering their eyebrows, he said.
He also said their faces did not match, claiming the arrest might have been a case of mistaken identity.
Claiming his son’s innocence, he also expressed disbelief that someone with his son’s background could approach a superstar’s residence, saying, “Even getting close to stars like Saif Ali Khan is difficult.”
According to his father, Shariful went to India in March-April 2024 after facing politically motivated cases in Bangladesh.
His father, a local BNP leader, said the family knew about his move and that Shariful worked at a bar in Mumbai, sending money home monthly.
Mumbai police confirmed Shariful briefly worked as a waiter but did not keep the job.
