Hindustan Surkhiyan Desk: India was 308/4 at stumps against West Indies on Day 2 of the second and final Test at the Rajiv Gandhi International stadium on Saturday. Ajinkya Rahane and Rishabh Pant were unbeaten on 75 and 85 runs respectively as the hosts now trail only by 3 runs against the visitor’s first innings total of 311.
West Indies finally managed to overcome the damages done by Umesh Yadav and Prithvi Shaw in the first session as they successfully scalped 3 Indian wickets before the tea break. By the end of the second session, India posted 173 runs in 47 overs at a loss of four wickets. Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was batting on 9, alongside vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane who remained unbeaten on 19.
After resuming the innings at 80/1, Shaw continued hammering the Windies bowlers. He slammed 3 more boundaries and added 70 runs against his name. However, before he could score the second consecutive Test ton, he was caught by Shimron Hetmyer off Jomel Warrican’s delivery in the 19th over.
In the very next over, Pujara (10) was removed by Shannon Gabriel and India were reduced to 102/3.
After losing three top-order batsmen, skipper Virat Kohli and his deputy Ajinkya Rahane anchored the innings. They stitched a 60-run partnership for the fourth wicket before Kohli was given lbw out by the umpire off Holder’s delivery. Though he took the review but the decision went in the favour of West Indies. The Indian skipper ended up scoring 45 off 78 balls including5 boundaries.
India got off to a decent start, reaching 80/1 at lunch after pacer Umesh Yadav starred with the cherry, taking his second five-wicket haul to bundle the West Indies out for 311 within the first hour of the second day of the second Test at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here on Saturday.
However, opener Lokesh Rahul’s (4) struggles with the willow continued as the right-hander dragged a good length delivery from Windies skipper Jason Holder onto his stumps.
Earlier, resuming at 295/7, West Indies could add just 16 runs to their overnight total with Roston Chase completing his fourth Test ton, second versus India before falling to Umesh, who returned career-best figures of 6/88.
Overnight batsman Devendra Bishoo (2) was the first to depart, in the very first over as he failed to hang around.Chase (106) ticked off his century while Warrican (8 not out) wielded his bat for sometime before Umesh speared in to pick the centurion Chase first and then last man Shannon Gabriel for a golden duck to wrap up the innings.
