A tribute on the death anniversary of George Harrison, a special friend of Bangladesh. You will be remembered forever.
The whole world knows him as the lead guitarist of the famous rock band, The Beatles. But the people of Bangladesh know him in a different way. As a true friend. In 1971, in response to the request of Pandit Ravi Shankar, George Harrison stood by the side of Bangladesh.
In 1971, his song ‘Bangladesh’ caused a stir all over the world. That song played a special role in creating world public opinion in favor of Bangladesh’s independence.
Yesterday was the death anniversary of this legendary singer.
The band, ‘The Beatles’ were a reflection of the protests against instability among young people in the 60’s. The Beatles enchanted an entire generation with their music.
To expose the brutal oppression of Pakistan during the War of liberation, to raise funds for the refugees, Harrison staged The Concert for Bangladesh at Madison Square Garden, New York, on Sunday, 1 August, 1971.
George Harrison was one of the organizers of the concert with his friend Ravi Shankar. Towards the end of the concert, Harrison sang the famous song titled ‘Bangladesh’. In a sad tone, he conveyed to the world the plight of the people during the liberation war.
This great artist died of cancer on November 29, 2001 at the age of 58.
George Harrison extended his helping hand not only for the liberation war of Bangladesh but also for the welfare of the oppressed people of any nation or country in the world.
He is no more in the light of life. Will never be again. But the shining example of humanity, George Harrison will live forever in the hearts of Bengalis, inspired by the liberating people of the world. My deepest tribute on his death anniversary.
