New York City— New York Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani made a high-profile visit to Washington this week, even as a fresh poll revealed an increasingly tight race for New York City’s mayoral election.

Mamdani, a progressive lawmaker representing Queens, met with members of Congress and policy advocates during his Washington trip. According to his office, the meetings focused on housing justice, immigrant rights, and advancing progressive priorities at the national level. Photos of Mamdani with congressional progressives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jamaal Bowman were widely shared on social media, with supporters praising his growing influence beyond city politics.

“This is about building bridges between our local struggles and the national conversation,” Mamdani said in a brief statement. “New York’s working-class communities need allies everywhere — from City Hall to Capitol Hill.”

Meanwhile, back home in New York City, a new public opinion poll released Wednesday indicated a tightening contest for the mayor’s office. The survey, conducted by [Polling Organization], showed incumbent Mayor Eric Adams’s lead shrinking to just 4 percentage points over his nearest challenger. Progressive candidates have gained ground in recent weeks, with housing, policing, and affordability emerging as key issues for voters.

Political analysts say Mamdani’s presence in Washington at this critical juncture underscores the increasing visibility of New York’s progressive movement, even as the city’s mayoral race enters its decisive phase.

One analyst noted, “Mamdani’s Washington visit serves two purposes — raising his own profile while reinforcing the progressive agenda nationally. It’s a signal that NYC’s left flank is far from retreating.”

With the Democratic primary just weeks away, the narrowing margins reflected in the latest poll have both camps ramping up their outreach to undecided voters.

The final outcome of the mayoral race is likely to have significant implications for the balance of power between moderates and progressives in city politics — a dynamic vividly reflected in Mamdani’s dual role as a rising progressive voice and a local lawmaker.
