In a tragic turn of events, a 24-year-old Bangladesh-born student of the local Hunter College has died after reportedly falling under a moving subway train in New York City, US.

Zinat Hossain was crushed under the train at around 9pm (local time) on Wednesday, Enamul Haque, president of the Greater Comilla Association in New York told Dhaka Tribune on Friday.

New York-based Bengali newspaper Thikana, however, reported that Zinat was pushed off by some unidentified miscreants.

“Police are yet to identify the perpetrators. Also, it is not sure if the death resulted from a hate crime,” it added.

Asked about what led to the fatality, Enamul said they, too, learnt from media reports that she was attacked.

“But we’re not sure what exactly had happened to her as police have contacted us and would detail us everything,” he said.

Hailing from Daudkandi upazila of Comilla, Zinat had been living with her parents in Brooklyn since 2016, added Enamul, who is also a close relative of the slain student.

Meanwhile, media reports suggest Bangladeshi community leaders have already met the New York police in Brooklyn regarding the incident as panic seized them.

Incidents of Bangladeshi-Americans getting attacked or killed in the US are reported very often.

The last time a person of Bangladeshi descent was killed in New York, was in February. Before that, a 51-year-old Bangladeshi man was stabbed to death in the city in October.
