BJP, Congress Slam AAP As Punjab Records 1,842 Farm Fires

Farm fire incidents continued unabated in Punjab with 1,842 cases of stubble burning recorded on Tuesday even as the state’s AAP government came under fire from the BJP and the Congress.

In Ludhiana district, the government has so far imposed ₹ 2.47 lakh in fines on farmers who burnt crop residue. Besides, 79 red entries have also been made in revenue records. Once a red entry is made in revenue records, a farmer may not be able to mortgage or sell the land.

Earlier in the day, the BJP targeted the AAP government over the rising stubble-burning cases and asked it to wake up from its “deep slumber”.

Slamming Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, it pointed out that he used to target earlier Punjab governments for failing to control farm fires and blame the state for causing pollution in New Delhi.

“Why is the Delhi Chief Minister staying mum now?” asked BJP’s Punjab unit general secretary Subhash Sharma.

BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh also blamed the AAP government for its “abysmal failure” in checking stubble burning in the state.

He said more than 16,000 incidents of farm fires had been recorded in Punjab, reflecting the “inefficiency and insensitivity” of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s government to address the problem. It also showed how “pathetic” it was to environmental issues in the region.

The Congress’ state unit chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring also lashed out at the AAP government over the issue, saying farm fires had led to an alarming increase in pollution levels in Punjab.

“It is a classic case of Nero playing the fiddle while Rome burnt,” Warring said.

“As AAP leaders are fiddling while fighting a losing battle in Gujarat, Punjabis have been left to suffocate due to stubble fires.” Warring advised the AAP government to spare some time for Punjab from its “busy schedule in Gujarat” so that pressing issues in the state where people trusted them with their votes could be addressed.

He also reminded Mr Kejriwal how he blamed farmers in Punjab in the past over the stubble-burning issue and had claimed that his government would solve the issue.

“What happened to your promise and what happened to your solutions?” he asked the Delhi chief minister, adding, “Just because you have gone silent as you can no longer criticise the Punjab government does not mean that the problem is over.” Warring also asked the Punjab government to spell out its policy on stubble burning.

“You have not offered any solution to farmers and now, when they are left with no option, you are slapping cases on them.” With the fresh incidents, the cumulative farm fire cases from September 15 to November 1 reached 17,846, according to data from Ludhiana-based Punjab Remote Sensing Centre.

The state had reported 33,175 and 14,920 farm fire cases during the same period in 2020 and 2021, respectively.

Of the 1,842 farm fire incidents, Sangrur recorded 345 cases — the highest in the state. Ferozepur recorded 229 cases, Patiala 196, Bathinda 160, Tarn Taran 123, Barnala 97 and Muktsar 91, the data showed.
