A heartfelt candlelight vigil was held on Wednesday, August 6, at Diversity Plaza in Jackson Heights, New York, in honor of the late NYPD Detective Didarul Islam. Organized by Bangladesh Society Inc., with support from other South Asian organizations and community members, the event brought together people from all walks of life in a powerful display of remembrance, unity, and respect.
The vigil began at 7 PM, where community leaders, family members, NYPD officers, and members of the public gathered to pay tribute through silent prayers, lighted candles, and emotional speeches reflecting on the life and contributions of the beloved detective.
The event received special support from Shah Nawaz, Chairman of the Trustee Board of Bangladesh Society Inc., who played a vital role in making this community gathering possible. He said:
“Detective Didarul Islam’s service and sacrifice are a source of pride for our community. Keeping his memory alive is our collective responsibility.”
Adding to the spirit of solidarity, Mrs. Rano Nawaz, wife of Shah Nawaz and a respected community activist, played a commendable behind-the-scenes role in coordinating and supporting the vigil. Her quiet strength and dedication were deeply appreciated by all in attendance.
The vigil was conducted under the overall leadership of Bangladesh Society Inc., with President Ataur Rahman Selim stating:
“This gathering reflects our community’s unity and compassion during this moment of grief. Detective Didar will always be remembered for his service and humanity.”
Detective Didarul Islam’s father, two sons, and brother-in-law were present at the vigil. His family members shared emotional words and extended gratitude to the community for standing by them during this painful time.
Imam Kazi Kaiyum led the special prayer (du’a), offering heartfelt words of comfort and remembrance for the late detective’s soul. The entire audience stood in reverent silence during the prayer, honoring a man whose dedication to public service touched many lives.
Mohammad Ali, General Secretary of Bangladesh Society Inc., hosted and moderated the event with compassion and poise, thanking all those who came together to support the vigil and uphold the values of unity and remembrance.
Members of the Bangladeshi American Police Association (BAPA), cultural and social leaders, and hundreds of Bangladeshi community members in New York came together to honor Detective Didarul Islam.
A respected and dedicated officer, Didarul Islam served with honesty, dignity, and deep commitment to the community. The vigil was not just a moment of mourning, but also a celebration of a life lived with purpose, compassion, and courage. It reminded everyone of the power of unity and collective remembrance.
