US President Donald Trump had suffered emotional abuse from his father Fred Trump, a real-estate mogul, claimed Mary Trump, the president’s niece, in her tell-all new book, The Guardian reported.
The book, titled “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man“, will be released on July 14, publisher Simon & Schuster announced on Monday, after a judge lifted a temporary ban on publication.
In her 240-page book, Mary Trump dubbed the US president as “the world’s most dangerous man”, AFP reported.
The Guardian has obtained a copy of the book penned by Mary Trump, who is a trained clinical psychologist.
In the book, Mary recounted what she witnessed of the “toxic family” in the home of her grandparents, according to her publisher.
“She describes a nightmare of traumas, destructive relationships, and a tragic combination of neglect and abuse,” Simon & Schuster says in a blurb about the book, according to an AFP report.
“Child abuse is, in some sense, the expectation of ‘too much’ or ‘not enough’, Mary wrote, adding that Donald Trump directly experienced the ‘not enough’ in the loss of connection to his mother at a crucial development stage, which was deeply traumatic, according to The Guardian report.
“…Having been abandoned by his mother for at least a year, and having his father fail not only to meet his needs but to make him feel safe or loved, valued or mirrored, Donald suffered deprivations that would scar him for life,” she also wrote in the book.
“The personality traits that resulted – displays of narcissism, bullying, grandiosity – finally made my grandfather take notice but not in a way that ameliorated any of the horror that had come before.”
Mary Trump also narrated that the president’s mother, also called Mary, had suffered serious health problems resulting from an emergency hysterectomy.
This had left Donald Trump and his siblings dependent on his father, whom Mary Trump described in the book as a “high-functioning sociopath”.
Fred Trump, a New York property developer, died in 1999. Mary Trump is daughter of his oldest son, also called Fred, who died in 1981 in his early 40s from the effects of alcoholism.
Mary also wrote that Donald Trump’s character was formed as he watched the traumas suffered by his older brother.
Donald Trump’s surviving siblings are: Robert Trump, a businessman; Maryanne Trump Barry, a retired judge; and Elizabeth Trump Grau, a retired banker.
The president’s brother Robert Trump had asked for a restraining order, arguing that Mary was violating a non-disclosure agreement signed in 2001 after the settlement over the estate of Fred Trump — father of Donald and Robert and of Mary’s father Fred Trump Jr.
Judge Alan Scheinkman postponed addressing whether the author had violated the agreement preventing her from revealing family secrets by writing the book. A hearing on that matter could take place this Friday.
Nevertheless Simon & Schuster “is not a party to the agreement,” so the block of their publication of the book “is vacated,” the judge ruled.
Simon & Schuster earlier published a White House memoir by former national security adviser John Bolton, The Guardian report added.
