In a suspected case of honour killing reported from Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun district, a 17-year-old girl was shot dead by her father in the wee hours of Monday, reportedly the teenager tried to elope with her lover.

The victim, a school dropout, was a native of Paroli village which falls under the jurisdiction of Bilsi police station in Budaun. The girl was in a relationship with a 21-year-old boy for the past two years. The duo wanted to get married. When the girl apprised her father, hhe didn’t approve of her relationship with the boy and prevented her from going out of the house. The mother of the victim didn’t oppose the relation, but she could not persuade her husband.

Forced to stay in the house for months, the victim dicided to run away with her boyfriend. Her father saw her running away from the house at around 4 am on Monday. He told her not to leave but she didn’t listen to him. Following this, the father allegedly gunned her down using a country made pistol. The man was about to flee, but his wife called the police, leading to him getting arrested, as per a report by The Times of India.

“He has been arrested and sent to jail after his wife’s complaint. In fact, she was a witness to the crime. We have also recorded the statement of neighbours,” the report quoted Bilsi CO Anirudha Singh as saying.

On the basis of a complaint registered by his wife, the cops have booked the accused for murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. Furthermore, the cops also recovered the country made pistol used in the crime and pressed relevant charges under the Arms Act against the man. The victim’s dead body was sent for autopsy.
