The guardians in Chattogram have expressed concern over the reopening of schools from September 12 without vaccination of the students.

Even though many college and university students have been vaccinated against Covid-19, school-level students are yet to get vaccines. As a result, the guardians have expressed fears that coronavirus may spread after schools reopen from tomorrow.

Kamrul Islam, the guardian of a university student, said though his daughter has been vaccinated against Covid, she might be infected with the deadly virus. “Many students became ill in the USA after reopening of the schools and colleges,” he added.

Another guardian Mofujur Rahman said, “We want to save the lives of our children first. Later, we can ensure their academic life. It is not a wise decision to reopen educational institutions before vaccinating all students.”

Shamima Sultana, mother of a primary student said, “I will not send my child to school just now. At first, I will observe the situation, and later I will take the decision in this regard.”

Salma Begum, mother of two schoolchildren said, “The government should first ensure vaccination and then the authority may reopen schools. Without vaccination, reopening of schools and other educational institutions will pose risk to all.”

Tahasunul Abedin, assistant professor at Chittagong University said, “The academic activities have been disrupted due to the outbreak of coronavirus. The examinations can be held after completing online classes. Later, we can reopen educational institutions gradually. As the government has taken the decision in this regard, we will take classes as per the directives of the education ministry.”

Professor Ariful Islam, acting principal of Bangladesh Women’s Association School and College said, “Students from nursery to college level are studying here. So, we have to take care of all students. We will try our best to maintain the health rules as per the directives of the ministry. We will take classes and observe the situation.”

Though the students seem happy to go to schools after a long time, their guardians have expressed worries over the rise in coronavirus infections in Chattogram.
