Chennai: In a macabre crime, a 50-year-old widow was allegedly raped by her 39-year-old son-in-law at her residence in Panruti village of Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district on Sunday. Later, the accused attempted to kill himself after the survivor lodged a complaint against him.
According to the police, the accused is a resident of the same village as the survivor. On Sunday, he came to her house and raped her. She was taken to Cuddalore Government General Hospital (CGGH) for medical care as she had suffered internal injuries. The hospital authorities informed the police about the case.
Subsequently, a team of officials from the all-women police station in Panruti met the 50-year-old survivor and conducted preliminary inquiries. Based on the information shared by the survivor, they registered a case of rape under IPC Section 376 against the accused.
Meanwhile, the woman’s son-in-law came to know that a case has been registered against him. Fearing police action, he tried to kill himself near his house. However, the timely intervention of his neighbours prevented him from taking the extreme step. Later, he was taken to CGGH for treatment.❐
