Hindustan Surkhiyan Desk:

Movie: October

Star-Cast: Varun Dhawan Banita Sandhu and Gitanjali Rao

Director by Shoojit Sircar

Duration:  1 hour 56 mins

Rating: 3/5

One of the most versatile filmmakers in Bollywood, Shoojit Sircar is back with an new unconventional love story. And as the makers said, ‘October’ is not a love story but rather a story about love. And likewise, the protagonist Dan seems to be obsessed with Shiuli in her worst phase and eventually falls in love!

Banita Sandhu looks promising in the film

STORY:Dan (Varun Dhawan), a carefree student of hotel management works as an intern at a top hotel in Delhi along with his batch mates. One day an accident takes place at the hotel where one of his colleagues Shiuli (Banita Sandhu), lands up at the hospital. The incident leaves a deep impression on Dan’s life and thereon, he embarks on an emotional journey where he seeks answers and eventually falls in love!

Varun Dhawan is back on screen after ‘Judwaa 2’ with a movie which is totally opposite of what he is known for, just like Badlapur, he takes us on a ride through emotions and his honesty comes across on the screen. October is undoubtedly Varun Dhawan’s career best movie and a milestone in his acting profession.

Shoojit Sircar’s ‘October’ says a lot, without saying too much. The film is crafted with such ease that you connect with it and literally live it till the very end.

Varun Dhawan as Dan is not just brilliant but also his character is larger than life. He expresses himself with his pure and simple words that Banita as Shuili understands with her silent stares.

The makers have established the title very well like they have throughout used the night jasmine flower also known as shiuli phool in Bengali in the backdrop that blooms in the month of October and is also the character name of the female protagonist.

Despite being an emotional movie, it’s not a story crafted with heavy doses of dialogues or romantic ballads and that’s where writer Juhi Chaturvedi scores and owns the movie with her powerful writing.

Can you imagine a humour in the film? The answer is yes, Juhi has written the movie in such manner that you get a chance to smile and laugh in this otherwise serious film!

And on top of it, the beauty lies in the simplicity of it all. Varun as Dan is under 25-year-old who is careless at work, he’s blunt and straightforward and expresses himself with a rare innocence that makes him lovable.

Newcomer Banita Sandhu looks promising as Shiuli and she has nothing more than a few glances and some casual conversation with her hero. Throughout the movie, she lies in bed, and Dan is drawn to her and something flourishes between them in those circumstances, maybe love?

The only problem with the movie is that it’s too slow, at times you get bored but then it’s a Soojit Sricar movie and you need time to understand the emotions.

The movie is unconventional and different from its league, maybe not for everybody. But it is Varun Dhawan’s career best movie that you can’t afford to miss!

The fragrant memory of Shiuli (the Bengali name for Night Jasmine) and Dan’s unconditional story stays with you when you leave the theatre!
