Young Indian wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya scripted history at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 on Wednesday (August 04) as he defeated Nurislam Sanayev from Kazakhstan in the men’s 57kg freestyle wrestling semi-final to assure the country of a silver medal. Dahiya displayed amazing grit and tenacity to come back from 9-2 down and get the better of Sanayev.
Dahiya has continued the trend of Indian wrestlers bringing home medals from the Olympics as he entered the final with a convincing performance despite trailing for the most part of his bout against the Kazakh. Coming back from 9-2 down, Dahiya took down Sanayev in the second round and cut the lead to just four points with the scoreline reading 9-5 in the Kazakh’s favour. He then got a leg hold to make it 9-7 before winning the game through fall.
Despite the momentum not being on his side and Sanayev dominating the proceedings, Dahiya fought till the end and ended up stunning the Kazakh to register a historic win. Dahiya will now be fighting for the gold when he takes on Zaur Uguev in the Men’s 57kg freestyle final on Thursday (August 05).
