Zahan Ara Dolon: The writer and blogger Abhijit Roy was commemorated by lighting candles in New York.
Expatriates from all walks of life were present at the Diversity Plaza in Jackson Heights in memory of Abhijit on February 27, Sunday.
Speakers at the event, organized under the banner of expatriate civil society, said that even if Abhijit was killed, his philosophy could not be killed. They further said, “The defeated forces are carrying out these killings to destroy the achievements of the liberation war, to kill non-communal consciousness, and to eradicate the idea of free will.”
They called on the government to crack down on these evil forces so that no more free thinkers die.
Activists demanded an immediate trial for Abhijit’s murder and a ban on all forms of communal politics in Bangladesh.
Community activists Mithun Ahmed, Gopal Sanyal, Ruposhi Bangla and Anuswar journalist Shah J Choudhury, Abdul Hamid, Jasad leader Noor A Alam Jiku and photojournalist Rinku spoke at the event anchored by community activist Minhaj Sammu.
