Hindustan Surkhiyan Desk: Mehedi Miraz revealed how senior player Tamim Iqbal, who sat out the West Indies Test series due to injury counselled him and motivated him to perform well. The off-spinner responded with a seven-wicket haul in the first innings and a fifer in second innings.
As things go in cricket, as a bowler, when one bowling partner grabs a lot of wickets, naturally the other bowling partner may be left feeling unhappy or worse, jealous. That is what could have happened to Mehedi Miraz after fellow off-spinner Nayeem Hasan bagged a fifer in debut while the former was left wicket-less during the first innings of the first Test. Tamim saw a potentially tricky situation and mitigated it by couselling and giving Miraz some great advise.
It is another instance of a senior player doing something for the team even as he was not involved in action. Following the match, Miraz told the story of what Tamim told him. “The way senior players guide us that makes us feel really big. For example Tamim bhai told me a few things that made me really happy,” Miraz said.
Tamim, among the chief think tank of the Tigers outfit told Miraz to keep his chin up and to be happy for Nayeem and his achievement.
“Tamim bhai said:’Miraz, we all know what kind of bowler you are. In this innings things didn’t go that well but there is nothing to be upset about it. Nayeem bowled well so be happy for him. If luck favours you then you will get wickets too but if you think that Nayeem bowled well but you didn’t pick up any wickets and that thought sticks to your mind then you will not be able to do well and you won’t become a good player,” Miraz revealed.
Miraz was the performer of the day today. Yesterday he picked up three wickets and then bagged four more to attain career-best figures of 7 for 58 and Tamim’s advice really transformed the 21-year old.
“‘We all know that you are a proven player. You performed in every team that you played for. You might not bowl well in one match but there is opportunity to come back and i believe in you,’Tamim bhai said,” Miraz said.
“Tamim bhai gave me various kind of support and it was very special for me to get his support. I was very happy and the first thing i did was to go and hug him after the match ended,” a buyouant Miraz remarked after picking up an incredible 12 wickets in the second Test as Bangladesh recorded their biggest-margin win in Test cricket and completed a 2-0 series sweep over the Windies.
