Hindustan Surkhiyan Desk: After launching a crackdown on immigrants taking up jobs in the US through stringent immigration policies, US President Donald Trump now says he is in favour of more “legal” immigration to hold up the country’s economy.
Because of the economic gains on his watch, Trump has said he wanted more people to come to the country.
He surprised many in his State of the Union address when he said he wanted people “to come into our country in the largest numbers ever, but they have to come in legally.”
The statement raised many eyebrows as his policy positions to date do not reflect that wish.
Asked Wednesday during a meeting with regional reporters whether the line represented a change in policy, Trump said it did.
That’s according to a transcript tweeted by a reporter from The Advocate, Louisiana newspaper, in which Trump is quoted saying: “I need more people coming in because we need people to run the factories and plants and companies that are moving back in”, the Associated Press reported.
Trump, in his annual State of the Union address, said: “We have a moral duty to create an immigration system that protects the lives and jobs of our citizens”.
“Tolerance for illegal immigration is not compassionate – it is cruel. One in three women is sexually assaulted on the long journey north. Smugglers use migrant children as human pawns to exploit our laws and gain access to our country,” he had said.
