The court on Monday has sentenced Regent Hospital Limited chairman Shahed Karim alias Mohammad Shahed to life imprisonment in a case filed under the Arms Act.
Judge KM Imrul Kayes of Dhaka Metropolitan Special Tribunal No. 1 read out the judgment around 2:00 pm.
Shahed was produced in court from jail before the verdict was announced. Of the 14 witnesses in the case – 11 testified in court at different times.
Earlier on September 20, the same court fixed today for announcing the verdict after hearing the arguments of both sides – the state and the accused.
The court on August 27 framed charges in the case, while the sole accused pleaded not guilty. Earlier on August 19, the court took into cognizance the charge-sheet filed in the case.
The IO and DB inspector Shairul filed the charge-sheet at the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Morshed Al Mamun Bhuiyan on July 30, while the court on August 13 transferred the case to Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court for further proceedings.
The members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Shahed from Debhata Upazilla of Shatkhira in the early hours of July 15 and was airlifted to the capital in the morning.
Detective Branch of police conducted a raid on one of his Uttara dens on July 18 and recovered illegal arms and narcotics. Later, a case was filed with Uttara West police station.
Shahed was also remanded in custody for 10 days on July 16 in a case filed on various charges of fraud, including fake reports in the name of coronavirus test.❐
