A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad joint convener Nazmul Hasan Sohag on a three-day remand in a case filed over rape of a student of Dhaka University.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kanak Kumar Barua placed him on a three-day remand after police produced Nazmul before the court and pleaded to place him on a seven-day remand. Nazmul’s lawyer, however, argued for his bail.
Investigation officer (IO) of the case DB inspector Md Wahiduzzaman said Sohag was arrested from Raishaheb Bazar area on Wednesday afternoon.
A female student of Dhaka University on September 21 filed the case with Lalbagh Police Station against six persons including Chhatra Odhikar Parishad convener Hasan Al Mamun, nazmul Hasan Sohag and Nurul Huq Noor bringing charges of rape and abetting the crime against them.
On the following day, she also filed a second case with Kotwali Police Station in Dhaka bringing allegation of assassinating her character on social media and a third case under Digital Security Act. All those six persons were made accused in the case, but Nazmul Hasan Sohag was made the prime accused.
Three other accused of the case are Chhatra Odhikar Parishad joint convener Md Saiful Islam, 28, organisation’s Dhaka University unit’s vice-president Md Nazmul Huda and activist Abdullah Hil Baqui, 23.
As none was arrested in 17 days after filing the case, the student started hunger strike at the Raju Memorial Sculpture of Dhaka University. Afterward, police arrested two accused–Saiful Islam and Md Nazmul Huda–on October 11 last. They are now in jail after their two-day remand.❐
