The plastic industry has become a very important part of Bangladesh’s industrial sector in the last two decades. Plastic use has been embedded into everything from everyday use household products to furniture to luxury clothing items. Plastic use is growing rapidly all over the world. With it, we’re facing the enormous challenges of plastic waste management. About 1.2 million people are currently involved in the industry. Man-made plastic waste or unused plastic material has been undegradable for over a hundred years.
A total of 5,000 factories have been set up in 8 different cities throughout the country including Dhaka, Chattogram, Narayanganj, Khulna, Comilla, Rajshahi and Bogra to turn the difficult challenge of plastic waste management into energy and resources through plastic recycling.
About 4,000 tonnes of plastic are being recycled every month in about 21 plastic recycling factories in Chattogram. These plastic flakes are exported to several countries including China, Belgium, Vietnam, India.
This promising industry is not only reducing the country’s plastic waste but also generating foreign exchange.
On today’s Inside Bangladesh watch the story of this promising industry.
