Hindustan Surkhiyan Desk:He joined the Public Works Department as a gardener in 1984. But unlike his co-workers, the class-IV employee saw a dramatic change in his fortunes in the last one decade.

The government employee, Selim Molla from Manikganj, is now a multi-millionaire. He owns two apartments in the capital, two cars, a duplex house and a multi-storey commercial building in Manikganj.

The Anti-Corruption Commission yesterday filed a graft case against Selim, also former vice president of Harirampur Upazila Awami League, for amassing wealth of around Tk 2.5 crore beyond his known sources of income.

Earlier on Sunday, members of Rapid Action Battalion arrested Selim, general secretary of Bangabandhu Peshajibi Parishad Manikganj Unit, in connection with two cases — one for abduction and the other for possession of illegal arms.

He was expelled from the post of Harirampur Upazila AL vice president after his arrest.

Yesterday, ACC Assistant Director Faridur Rahman filed the corruption case with Ramna Police Station against Selim.

According to the case statement, Selim bought a luxurious apartment in Uttar Shahjahanpur in the capital against the name of his third wife Hafiza Khan and a plot in Khilgaon rehabilitation project against the name of his second wife Parvin Aktar.

Selim owns a duplex house and a multi-storey commercial building in Manikganj. He also has a sedan, a microbus and a truck.

On October 18 last year, the ACC issued a notice to Selim, asking him to submit his wealth statement.

He submitted his wealth statement around two weeks later, stating that the value of his immovable property was Tk 80.95 lakh and that of his movable property Tk 17.31 lakh.

However, the ACC in its enquiry found that the actual value of his immovable property would be around Tk 3 crore.

The commission also found discrepancy between Selim’s wealth statement and his income tax file.

In the file, he showed the total value of his movable and immovable assets at Tk 67.31 lakh, concealing information on his wealth worth Tk 30.94 lakh, according to ACC officials.

AL EXPELS SELIM

Rab-2 personnel on Sunday night arrested 10 people, including Selim and his son Rajibul Hasan Rajib, general secretary of Harirampur Upazila Chhatra League, from their house on the charge of abducting two businessmen.

The law enforcers also recovered six pistols and several sharp weapons, and rescued the two businessmen from the house.

In a press release on Wednesday night, Harirampur Upazila AL unit said Selim was expelled from the post of the unit’s vice president as he tarnished the image of the party and breached discipline.

The upazila unit also expelled its labour affairs secretary Mosharaf Hossain, who is also an accused in the cases.

Earlier on Monday, the BCL central committee expelled Selim’s son Rajib from the post of general secretary of Harirampur Upazila Chhatra League and also from the student body over his alleged involvement in the abduction and possession of illegal arms.

An abduction case was filed against the 10 with Tejgaon Police Station in the capital while an arms case was lodged with Harirampur Police Station in Manikganj against them.

Lutfar Rahman, officer-in-charge of Harirampur Police Station, said they are grilling the accused in the arms case.
