Hindustan Surkhiyan Desk:A month and a half after sudden stay on polls, the election campaign of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) started formally again today.

The election, which was scheduled to be held on May 15 before a stay on it by the High Court, is now billed for June 26.

As the festivity of Eid-ul-Fitr was about to end the whole city corporation has been decorated with posters, banners and festoons of different candidates.

Awami league candidate Jahangir Alam held a rally at Botbazar area around 10 am, triggering a gridlock on Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway.

BNP mayoral candidate Hasan Uddin also held discussion with party leaders and activists at Auzbazar in Tongi

Besides the large two party candidates other five mayoral candidates, councilor candidates, and women candidates of reserve seats also conducted their campaigns.

Five other GCC mayoral candidates are – Md Ruhul Amin of Communist Party of Bangladesh, Md Jalal Uddin of Bangladesh Islami Front, Fazlul Haque Minar of Islami Oikkya Jote, Md Nasir Uddin of Islami Andolan Bangladesh and independent candidate Farid Ahmed.

A total of 11 lakh voters are expected to cast their votes in the upcoming polls of 57 general ward councilors and 19 reserve women seats.

Earlier, the GCC polls were scheduled to be held on May 15, while the High Court stayed it.

Later, the Appellate Division reviewed the High Court order and asked the Election Commission to hold the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Election within June 28.
