Bangladesh is now in the seventh position on the list of countries with most active COVID-19 cases as the number of new cases in the country continues to soar.
The Directorate General of Health Services on Saturday said that 2,644 new COVID-19 cases were detected across the country in the 24 hours ending at 8:00am on the day, taking the number of cases to 2,74,525.
The number of deaths from the infection has reached 3,625 while 1,57,635 patients have recovered so far.
Bangladesh has now 1,13,265 active cases, making it the seventh on the list of countries with active cases, although the country is in the 16th position in terms of total COVID-19 cases, according to the USA-based reference website worldometers.info.
Bangladesh recorded its first three COVID-19 cases on March 8 and the first death from the infection on March 18.
The country on Saturday passed the 23rd week of infection.
The rate of infection in Bangladesh remains high with 21.08 per cent in the outgoing 23rd week while the overall rate of infection is 20.46 per cent making it one of the world’s top 10 countries with high rates of infection.❐
