Law enforcers have arrested two people over the attack on Ghoraghat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) in Dinajpur district Wahida Khanam which left her seriously injured.

A team of police and Rapid Action Battalion arrested them from Hakimpur upazila of Dinajpur around 4am on Friday, said officer-in-charge of Hakimpur Police Station Ferdous Wahid.

He said the arrestees were seen in CCTV footage entering the UNO residence. “One of the arrestees is a drug addict. We’re interrogating them,” the OC said.

Meanwhile, a case has been filed against 4-5 unidentified people over the attack on the UNO.

Her brother M Sheikh Farid Uddin filed the attempted murder case with Ghorghat Police Station on Thursday night, said its OC Amirul Islam.

Besides, Wahida has undergone brain surgery at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in the capital.

The operation that lasted for over two hours ended at 11:05pm on Thursday, said hospital’s Deputy Director Prof Dr Badrul Alam.

He said the UNO has been kept on observation. “Her condition is little bit better now. But she is not out of danger.”

The physician said it will take some time to say whether the surgery was successful. “It’s a matter of hope that all of her parameters are good.”

The UNO was airlifted to Dhaka and admitted to the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital on Thursday.

Miscreants stormed the official residence of the UNO in the early hours and beat her and her father Omar Ali with hammers, leaving them injured.

They were first taken to Sadar Hospital from where Wahida, 35, was shifted to a Rangpur hospital where she was given treatment at its intensive care unit.

Quoting doctors, officer-in-charge of Ghoraghat Police Station Amirul Islam said there were big injury marks on the left side of the UNO’s head and her left hand and leg were not responding.

Wahida’s husband Mejbahul Hossain is the UNO of Pirganj in Rangpur and the couple has a three-year-old son. Omar came to visit his daughter’s residence from Naogaon.

Deputy Commissioner of Dinajpur Mahmudul Alam said the miscreants entered the UNO’s residence around 3am breaking open a ventilator.

They first attacked her father and confined him to a bathroom, he said, adding that they later swooped on Wahida and beat her mercilessly.

The DC suspected that the attack was carried out in a bid to kill the UNO.❐
