BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s lawyer Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokon expressed that the government will provide permission to BNP chief for her treatment.

He further hopes that the government will also extend the suspension of Khaleda Zia’s sentence.

He came up with the expectation while talking to reporters around 9:15pm on Saturday, after meeting with BNP Chairperson in the capital’s Gulshan residence.

Khokon said, “Khaleda Zia needs no permission from the court for visiting abroad for treatment. She could go abroad with decision of the government.”

Earlier at 8:00pm, Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokon went to Khaleda’s Gulshan residence ‘Firoza’ to discuss over extension of her sentence suspension and cases.

Meanwhile, family of Khaleda Zia has filed a petition with the home ministry seeking extension of suspension for BNP Chairperson’s sentence.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told a private television on Saturday.

He said, “Khaleda Zia’s younger brother filed a petition with the ministry. A letter was sent to the Law Ministry for further procedure. Next steps would be taken based on opinions of the Law Ministry.”

It was learnt that Khaleda Zia’s younger brother Shamim Iskander, on behalf of the family, filed the petition mentioning her physical grounds.

Mentionable, the family has applied for permanent release before sentence of Khaleda Zia, who was convicted in two corruption cases, expires.

On March 25, Khaleda Zia was released for six months on two conditions on humanitarian grounds after the government’s executive order suspended her sentence. The suspension order will expire on September 25. Khaleda Zia landed in the Dhaka central jail on February 8, 2018 in a corruption case. He was later admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital due to physical illness.
