Hosts India and England will face each other in the third Test of the four-match series at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad on Wednesday. The name has been changed before the start of the first match at the newly constructed stadium. From now on, the name of this ground will be ‘Narendra Modi Stadium’, not Sardar Patel.
The name of the stadium was changed to ‘Narendra Modi Stadium’ after the current Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi before the start of the India-England day-night Test.
Home Minister Amit Shah, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Joy Shah and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju were present during the inauguration of the stadium.
The Narendra Modi Stadium is the largest cricket ground in the world with a capacity of 110,000. It also surpassed the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Apart from the pink ball test which started today, the fourth match of the series will also be held here. Besides, all the matches of the five-match T20 series will be hosted by this historic stadium in India.
Speaking at the inaugural function, Amit Shah said a Sports Complex would be constructed at Narayanpura in association with Narendra Modi Stadium and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave in Motera. These three stadiums will always be equipped to host any international sports event. “I hope Ahmedabad will re-emerge as India’s ‘sports city’,” he added.❐
