The Director General (DG) of Rab talked to reporters at a press conference about the arrest of Shahed, the chairman of Regent Hospital.
The press conference began at the media center of the Rab headquarters at around 3 pm on Wednesday.
The elite force DG narrated how they arrested the fraudster and replied to different questions of journalists.
Earlier in the morning, Rab arrested him from Satkhira with an illegal weapon.
Shahed Karim was arrested over various irregularities, fraudulence, breach of contract with the government and giving false reports of corona tests. He was trying to flee to India wearing a burqa.
In a briefing at Satkhira Stadium around 8am, Rab’s legal and media wing director Lt Col Ashiq Billah said Shahed had a plan to cross the border in the early hours.
He was wearing a burqa while fleeing by a boat so that no one can recognise him, said the Rab official.
However, Shahed was arrested from the boat around 5:10am, he said, adding that a firearm, three bullets and a magazine were also recovered from his possession.
Ashiq said the boatman fled jumping in the river but Shahed could flee as he is a fatty man.
Shahed was arrested from a boat at Lobangapati near Sakor Bazar of Debhata border in Satkhira around 5:10am, said Lt Col Ashiq Billah.
Shahed was trying to flee to India with the help of a lost local smuggler.
Later, he was brought to the Rab headquarters in Dhaka by a helicopter.
Earlier on Tuesday, the elite force arrested managing director of the Regent Hospital from Gazipur district.
Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has sought documents from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) and Bangladesh Bank about Regent Group Chairman Mohammad Shahed over his corruption.
It has sent a letter signed by the chief of the investigation team, ACC deputy director M Abu Bakar Siddique, to the DGHS and Financial Intelligence unit of the central bank in this regard.
Shahed had been absconding since Rab raided the Uttara and Mirpur branches of his hospital on July 6, and arrested eight people on charge of issuing fake Coronavirus test reports in addition to charging the admitted Covid-19 patients exorbitant fees.
The head office of Regent group along with the both hospitals was sealed off and 16 people, including the chairman, were sued on charge of issuing fake coronavirus test reports. ❑
