A Dhaka court on Sunday convicted two people, including the mother of slain five-year-old Samiul Azim Wafi, and sentenced them to death over murder of the child.

However, it took almost a decade for the court to deliver judgement in the case though the murder was happened in 2010.

The condemned convicts are Ayesha Humaira Esha, mother of the child, and her paramour Shamsuzzaman Arif Bakku. Both of them have been absconding receiving bail from the court.

The court also fined the convicts Tk 5,000 each.

Samiul’s father KA Azam filed a murder case with Adabar Police Station in the city on June 24, 2010. The plaintiff KA Azam died when the trial of the case was going on.

In an immediate reaction, Special Public Prosecutor Farukuzzaman Bhuiyan, a close friend of Samiul’s father, expressed satisfaction with the verdict.

According to the case statement, Samiul, a student of play group of Green Wood International School in Nabboddya Housing under Adabor Police Station in Dhaka, was allegedly killed by his mother Esha and her paramour Shamsuzzaman Arif Bakku on June 23, 2010.

On November 23, the trial court fixed the date after completion of arguments of both the prosecution and defence sides.❐
