Stamford University student Shipra Debnath, also a crew member of slain Maj (retd) Sinha Md Rashed Khan, went to Cox’s Bazar Police Station last night to file a case against two superintendents of police and 150 others under the Digital Security Act on charge of circulating her private photos on social media.

However, the officer-in-charge of Cox’s Bazar Police Station did not take the case and instead suggested that Shipra file it with Ramu Police Station or with the cyber-crimes tribunal, Shipra’s lawyer Mahbubul Alam Tipu told reporters in front of the police station.

Mostafijur Rahman, SP of Satkhira, and Mohammad Mizanur Rahman Shelley, SP (Dhaka Metro — South) of the Police Bureau of Investigation, will be made accused in the case along with 100-150 others, informed the lawyer.

The lawyer also said Shipra’s personal photos were posted on different social media sites, including Youtube, after doctoring and editing those in an offensive way. She thought that she was defamed through it, and therefore came to file the case under sections 19, 25 and 29 of DSA, the lawyer said.

“As we explained the matter to the OC, he suggested that we file the case at Ramu Police Station as the place of occurrence was Himchhari. We think, as it went viral worldwide through social media and also as she [Shipra] is now staying at Jol Torongo Resort in Cox’s Bazar, she thought she could file the case at Cox’s Bazar Police Station,” the lawyer also said.

“Along with that, the OC also suggested that we file the case at a tribunal,” he added.

Shipra and another Stamford student Shahadul Islam Sefat were also present but the journalists could not talk to them. They went to the police station around 11:30pm.

Cox’s Bazar OC Khairuzzaman did not receive phone calls despite several attempts.

Earlier in a video statement on Monday, Shipra promised to file cases under the Digital Security Act against police officials and others who made her life miserable by circulating her private photos on social media.❐
