The prosecution today sought seven-year jail for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, claiming they proved her involvement in Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.

Chief Prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajal, during hearing today, said his team proved Khaleda abused power and amassed wealth behind the poster of Zia Charitable Trust.

“She abused power and amassed wealth. The wealth was used for personal purpose,” he told the court.

Last reported, Judge MdAkhtaruzzaman of the Special Court-5 in Dhaka, who earlier set February 8 to deliver the verdict in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, adjourned the hearing till post-lunch.

On August 8, 2011, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station, accusing four people, including Khaleda, of raising funds for the trust from unknown sources through abuse of power.

Khaleda seeks acquittal

Meanwhile, Khaleda submitted a written self defence before the court seeking acquittal and claiming that the prosecution failed to prove any charges against her.

“The case was filed to demean me and harass me. Now, I am a victim of unjust situation,” she said. “I know, and you also understand, that the case is being run to demean me under government order in an illegal means.”
