A Bronx housing officer died of the coronavirus Sunday, marking the 54th member of the NYPD to succumb to the virus.
Angel Santiago, 42, joined the NYPD in 2016, after serving seven years as a school safety agent, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said in a message to the police force on Sunday.
“His dedication to our department and the people of New York City will never be forgotten,” Shea said. “Our NYPD family today mourns the tragic death of Angel, as well as the untimely passings of all of our brothers and sisters taken by COVID-19.”
Santiago, who lived in the Bronx, was assigned to the NYPD’s Police Service Area 7, which covers several city housing developments in the 40th and 42nd Precincts.
“One year into this pandemic, COVID has claimed the life of another PBA member, PO Angel M. Santiago of @NYPDPSA7. The sacrifice never ends,” the Police Benevolent Association tweeted Sunday.❐
